TRUE Natural Cosmetics Sunscreen is Awarded NPA Certification
TRUE Natural Cosmetics, a Washington based sun and skin care company, was awarded natural certifications by the Natural Products Association (NPA) for their sunscreen and self-tanner. The NPA is a US non-profit organization devoted to the natural products industry, and has created a set of guidelines that dictate whether a product can be deemed truly “natural.” To date the NPA has certified over 300 personal care products from 28 different companies. TRUE’s sunscreen joins the short list of 5 companies who have received natural certification for sunscreen.
NPA Natural Certification Guidelines
In order for a product to become certified by the NPA and receive the NPA’s Natural Seal it must adhere to strict standards of natural guidelines based on natural ingredients, safety, responsibility and sustainability.
- Natural Ingredients: A product labeled “natural” should be made up of only, or at least almost only, natural ingredients and be manufactured with appropriate processes to maintain ingredient purity.
- Safety: A product labeled “natural” should avoid any ingredient with a suspected human health risk.
- Responsibility: A product labeled “natural” should use no animal testing in its development.
- Sustainability: A product labeled “natural” should use biodegradable ingredients and the most environmentally sensitive packaging.

Natural Sunscreen, Natural Ingredients
True’s product line consists of three products, a sunscreen, a moisturizer and self-tanning lotion, all which have been certified by the NPA. The company claims that all products are 100% naturally sourced and use USDA certified organic ingredients wherever possible. Moreover, the company maintains that their products use completely natural preservatives, which helps to give the products a two year shelf life.
In addition, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has added True’s sunscreen to their list of the 2011 Best Beach & Sport Sunscreens. The sunscreen contains mineral zinc oxide, which is the active ingredient and is FDA approved as a sunscreen ingredient.
